Social media is fun - and functional.

Personally and professionally, I'm fascinated by the way we communicate and interact online. Social media has changed the way people obtain and share information - whether it's a national headline or a family photo. It's also a powerful marketing tool, enabling a deeper level of engagement between a brand and its consumers.

Student Organic Farm Crowd-Funding Campaign 

As a member of Oakland University's Communications and Marketing department, I worked with the annual giving team to help the Student Organic Farm launch a 48-hour crowd-funding campaign in September 2013. The student organization wanted to raise $5,000 to build a hoop house that would extend their growing season. 

I collaborated with the interactive web designer/videographer and the social media team with the integrated marketing efforts. We worked with the group to help brand their campaign, film promotional videos and create awareness. The organization's Facebook followers increased from 500 to almost 1,000 in just a few weeks. The Student Organic Farm successfully reached their fundraising goal, raising $5,067 in just 48 hours.

#ThisIsOU and The Social Media Street Team

I worked with the social media team at Oakland University Communications and Marketing to plan and implement the official Oakland University hashtag #ThisIsOU in September 2013.  The goal was to to foster relationships with students and showcase the university's lively and diverse campus by encouraging user-generated visual content. The Communications and Marketing department worked with a group of select student leaders, dubbed the Social Media Street Team, to introduce the hashtag and create a buzz around campus. 

#ThisIsOU quickly generated photos of campus scenery and construction, student athletes in action, the Grizz and proud students sporting their OU gear. In its first six months, #ThisIsOU has generated approximately 500 posts and the university's Instagram follower count increased from 1,200 to nearly 2,000. The hashtag is also popular on Twitter.
